Lufthansa Porsche First Class Excitement @ FRA

Lufthansa offers their First Class guests in Frankfurt and Munich, the opportunity to rent a Porsche during their layover. The Lufthansa Porsche First Class Excitement program is a must do if you have or purposely create a long layover. For €99, you get a 3 hour rental in a Porsche 911 and it includes 150km, the gas plus insurance.

I prebooked the car through the link provided by Lufthansa which brings you to Avis. Avis is the rental car company Lufthansa uses to rent the 911. An agent in the Lufthansa First Class Terminal can make a same-day booking for you as well if you didn’t plan in advance. You have to walk back to the main terminal and head to the rental car center. I would highly recommend having an Avis Preferred account setup as the line was much shorter and less paperwork was required. I only needed to show my AMEX Platinum card for payment despite the instructions mentioning you need to present 2 credit cards. The Avis agent didn’t ask for my boarding pass or anything. She wanted to clock out and join me for the ride. You might be able to book this while flying Business or Coach class…

I headed to the assigned stall and I was shocked to see a 2018 911 Carrera GTS Convertible sitting there. I had never driven a Porsche before so it took some getting used to before I pulled out of the space. The GPS is supposed to come preloaded with the different routes, but unfortunately this car didn’t have any preloaded so I just winged it using Google Maps for navigation. Trying to drive in a different country and not know where you are going is challenging. I wish I had a co-pilot!

I finally figured out how to get away from Frankfurt airport and headed northeast for the Wetterau Route. I was able to open it up on Highway 66 near Gründau. Wow! This car was a rocket ship. It’s faster than the BMW i8 which I rented in Munich a few years ago. After getting lost through some small town, I finally found a destination within the allocated kilometers I had on the rental. Burg Ronneburg is an ancient castle located near Gründau. It was a perfect area to snap a few pictures before heading back to FRA.

Upon returning to FRA, I set Google Maps to the Lufthansa First Class Terminal as you they handle the return process. I hit some traffic, but I was back in 2.5 hours and went 138km of the 150km allocated. The First Class Terminal agent greeted me upon arriving and felt like I was going to valet the car. Amazing service! I handed him the keys and off I went to grab a meal before my flight to Warsaw.

Conclusion: You must do this if you fly Lufthansa First Class through Frankfurt or Munich! It’s a true Autobahn experience 🙂
