United Airlines First Class: CLD-DEN E175

This was my first time trying United’s new service from Carlsbad (CLD) to Denver (DEN), which launched on March 30, 2026. I booked the itinerary for 30,000 United MileagePlus miles one-way from CLD–DEN–FCA, all in First Class. While it wasn’t the best mileage redemption, cash fares to Kalispell (FCA) were expensive, so using miles made sense.

For those living in North County San Diego, CLD is a great alternative to SAN. The airport has a relaxed, private-terminal feel that’s a refreshing change from the larger commercial airports. Parking is just $7 per day and is prorated to your exact entry and exit times. For my four-day weekend, parking came to only $22.48. Even better, it’s just a five-minute walk from the parking lot to the check-in counter—no shuttle buses, no long walks, just an easy stroll in the San Diego sunshine. I arrived around 11:30 AM for my 1:00 PM departure, intentionally giving myself extra time to enjoy lunch overlooking the tarmac before the flight. There wasn’t a single person in line at check-in, and within minutes my bag was tagged and on its way. While chatting with the counter agent, I learned that flights have been averaging about 50% full, although many of the remaining seats sell within the final 12 hours before departure. For travelers accustomed to chartering private flights from CLD before commercial service returned this year, United’s new route offers a much more affordable alternative.

The Landings Restaurant & Bar is located just steps from the terminal—about 100 feet from the check-in counter. I grabbed an outdoor table with a front-row view of both the American Airlines and United aircraft arriving and departing. Both airlines operate the Embraer E175 on these routes, which happens to be one of my favorite regional jets thanks to its comfortable cabin and First Class seating. Based on my server’s recommendation, I ordered the Crab Cake Sandwich, and it exceeded expectations. For airport dining, the quality was outstanding and reasonably priced. My food arrived in about 15 minutes, leaving plenty of time to enjoy lunch before heading through security about 45 minutes before departure.

One thing to note is that CLD does not currently have a TSA PreCheck lane, although the security process was still quick due to the airport’s small size. Beyond security are just two gates—one for United and one for American—which both lead directly onto the tarmac. There’s also a small outdoor patio if you’d rather wait outside and enjoy some fresh air before boarding.

Boarding began right on schedule, and we walked across the ramp to the aircraft. I was seated in 1A, the single-seat side of the Embraer E175’s 1-2 First Class configuration, which provides a little extra privacy. Once everyone was onboard, we taxied out and were soon airborne on our way to Denver. About 20 minutes after takeoff, the flight attendants began beverage service along with a light snack. I started with a ginger ale before switching to a local IPA for the remainder of the flight.

One of the highlights of the trip was United’s complimentary Starlink WiFi. As long as you have a free United MileagePlus account, internet access is included. Speeds consistently exceeded 200 Mbps, making it one of the fastest in-flight internet experiences I’ve ever had on United. I also connected my Ubiquiti UTR Travel Router, which securely encrypted my connection back to my home network through a VPN. Since I only have a single United login, I was able to share the connection across multiple devices. Thanks to Starlink, working remotely from 35,000 feet is finally a practical reality.

We landed in Denver right on schedule. With a lengthy layover before my connecting flight to Kalispell, I made my way over to the American Express Centurion Lounge to relax and get some work done before continuing my journey.

Conclusion: After experiencing United’s new CLD service, I can confidently say I’ll be checking Carlsbad alongside San Diego every time I book a trip. While the limited destinations and generally higher fares mean it won’t completely replace SAN for most of my travel, the convenience is hard to beat. Between the inexpensive parking, stress-free terminal experience, short walk from curb to gate, and complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi, CLD offers one of the most enjoyable airport experiences in Southern California.

If the fares—or award availability—line up, choosing CLD is an easy decision.
