Last Chance to Transfer AMEX Points to Alaska Airlines via Hawaiian Airlines (+Consolidate your Alaska Airlines miles)
As the merger of loyalty programs between Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines approaches, the opportunity to transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points is quickly disappearing. Starting July 1st, 2025 (less than 30 days away), Hawaiian Airlines will no longer be an American Express transfer partner. Since September 26th, 2024, there has been a valuable loophole allowing you to use your AMEX points to boost your Alaska Airlines mileage balance through Hawaiian Airlines.
Transfer Flow:
AMEX → Hawaiian Airlines → Alaska Airlines
To transfer miles between your Hawaiian and Alaska accounts, simply use the following link: https://storefront.points.com/mileage-plan/en-US/exchange/lps?lpId=2053
Another loophole that will be closed in August 2025, when Hawaiian Miles accounts are merged into the Alaska Mileage Plan, is the ability to consolidate miles from multiple Hawaiian and Alaska Airlines accounts by being a Hawaiian Airlines credit cardholder. Thanks to Hawaiian’s Share Miles program, cardholders can receive or transfer their HawaiianMiles to another person’s account, allowing family and friends to accumulate miles for award travel more quickly. This is a great way to consolidate a family members account which might have a few thousand miles in their account so you can actually redeem them for a valuable flight.
Example:
Member A (Hawaiian cardholder): 221,000 Alaska Airlines Miles
Member B: 22,000 Alaska Airlines Miles
Member C: 57,000 Alaska Airlines Miles
Member D: 31,000 Alaska Airlines Miles
Member B,C,D transfer their Alaska Miles to Hawaiian Miles, then transfer to Member A Hawaiian Miles account. Member A then transfers their Hawaiian Miles to Alaska Airlines Miles. Member A ends up with 300,000 Alaska Airlines Miles. You can now book (4) 75,000 award tickets whereas before the transfers you’d only be able to book (2) 75,000 award tickets from Member A’s account.
Please note: Hawaiian Airlines credit cardholders are limited to receiving miles transfers up to 10 times per calendar year.
More details on the Share Miles program can be found here: https://hawaiianair.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/383/kw/
To initiate a transfer via Share Miles, log into your Hawaiian Airlines account and then proceed to: https://www.hawaiianairlines.com/my-account/hawaiianmiles/sharemiles/enterrecipient
Conclusion: If you’re holding a Hawaiian Airlines credit card, I recommend consolidating your miles into a single account to optimize your redemption options. I would avoid speculatively transferring miles from AMEX unless you have a planned trip or need a reliable program to transfer your miles to if you’re considering canceling your AMEX account and need a home for your points.
