Aeromexico Business Class: TIJ-MEX B737-9 MAX
I was looking to use Delta SkyMiles to fly from San Diego to Cancun and found a flight via ATL for 52,000 miles and $47.52 USD in taxes for Comfort +. This was way overpriced so I knew there would be a cheaper way to get there. I found if you fly out of Tijuana it was 20,000 miles and $59.52 USD in taxes for Business Class connecting via MEX. Flying out of TIJ would require using the CBX bridge which has some fees but it was well worth it to save 32,000 miles. I was able to fly in Business Class on Aeromexico for 40,000 miles roundtrip. Both options from Delta & Aeromexico were redeyes so the quality of the flight times were both poor. Redeyes are the worst!
The adventure across the CBX bridge into TIJ from San Diego was very easy and I’d do it again. Boarding for the redeye flight to Mexico City from Tijuana started about 35 minutes before departure. No jet bridge was used so we walked to the plane on the tarmac and boarded via stairs. I found my seat, 2A, and settled in. I was flying on a new B737-9 MAX so everything felt clean and modern. It was very similar to the First Class seat on Alaska Airlines new B737-9 MAX. A light blanket and small pillow were provided as well.
The flight time was just 3 hours so I needed to get as much sleep as I could given the 11:30PM departure time. I reclined after takeoff from Tijuana and was able to get ~2 hours of sleep.
I did notice something strange just below the TV at my seat. They installed a camera to watch the passenger. I’ve seen this on other planes, but I’m unsure if Aeromexico uses it in practice. From a privacy perspective, this is concerning. I’d bring a strip of black electrical tape next time.
WiFi was available inflight for $8 for the entire flight. Since I needed to sleep I didn’t buy the WiFi package, but I did select the free messaging option so I could stay connected on iMessage and WhatsApp.
We landed into dark Mexico City around 3:45AM and I proceeded to the Aeromexico lounge to wait for the AMEX Centurion Lounge to open at 5AM. It’s worth a detour to the AMEX lounge. The breakfast menu was extensive and food/drink is delivered to your seat just like a restaurant wait service instead of a buffet. On my way back home I went via the same route and tried their lunch/dinner menu which was impressive as well. The food on Aeromexico wasn’t great so I’d just eat at the AMEX lounge before your flights.
Overall: Aeromexico was a solid option instead of wasting miles to fly Delta via Atlanta to get to Cancun. Business Class is similar to US domestic recliner seats so a nice upgrade, but not lie flat on their 737’s. I wouldn’t hesitate to use Delta SkyMiles to book Aeromexico in Business Class again.
